The Armory Show 2026

Jane Lombard Gallery is pleased to present a solo installation by Mexican-American artist Margarita Cabrera at the 2026 edition of the Armory Show. Featuring works from her seminal series, Space in Between, Cabrera transforms U.S. Border Patrol uniforms into a desert of soft- sculpted cacti. Developed through collaborative workshops with immigrant communities, this series reflects upon the uncertainty of life between borders, identities, and competing notions of belonging. Using colorful thread and traditional embroidery techniques, participants inscribed their stories onto the sculptures. Border Patrol insignias appear alongside phrases of hope, freedom, trust, and belonging, bringing symbols of national identity and authority into dialogue with personal narrative. Taking the shape of flora and fauna indicative of the collaborators’ homeland, participants transform a material associated with surveillance and border enforcement into a space of individual expression and shared storytelling. Collectively, the works emerge as a symbolic landscape, one that renegotiates the predominant narrative of transborder experiences.
