Published on the occasion of Howard Smith’s solo exhibition at Jane Lombard Gallery, Tomorrow Isn’t Yesterday, on view from September 9th – October 24th, 2026. Spanning nearly five decades of the artist’s practice, the exhibition brings together paintings that explore the relationships between color, surface, and perception. A key figure in the Radical Painting movement of the 1980s, Smith’s freehand process allows color and gesture to accumulate gradually, resulting in works that emphasize the physical and perceptual experience of painting.
